Three ways to automatically test your Power BI report (w/ Nar Windenberger)

February 15, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm CST

Power BI developer: “Hi Boss, I just published the latest PBIX file with the new customer churn analysis!”

Boss: “this is awesome. BTW, why are the sales figures from 2022 about 10% higher than yesterday? Something looks off”

Dev: “😳. Shoot, I did a quick scan of the numbers but didn’t notice that discrepancy.”

Boss: “I’m going to need you to come in on Saturday and fix it.”

Raise your hand if you’ve heard of Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CICD) or DevOps. CI/CD, a critical component of DevOps, is a best practice for Agile software development. Embodied and pioneered by tech giants like Amazon, Netflix, and Facebook, CI/CD allows faster iterations and deployment of new software. Power BI has traditionally been hard to set up with normal CI/CD, but the Power BI ecosystem and community are quickly reducing the chasm especially for enterprise data models. That’s great if you run an enterprise BI solution, but what can self-service Power BI developers use when full-blown DevOps solutions are not practical? Specifically, how can you reduce your deployment testing lifecycle on a smaller budget? That’s what we’ll cover in this Power BI User group session on how to set up Automated Tests for your Power BI models.

This session is presented by P3 Adaptive Principal Consultant Nar Windenberger who brings his 5 years of experience consulting for a wide array of companies spanning small/medium sized businesses to Fortune 500 companies. He will discuss how as a self-service BI developer you can find the sweet spot of creating automated tests to spend less time manually testing your models, and more time producing high-quality reports. Learn how to avoid the scenario above so that you can spend your weekends relaxing instead of fixing bugs on production.
