Docker for Devs, not Ops
July 9, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm CDT
Docker has been a transformative tool in the IT industry. Containers, as popularized by Docker, have solved many problems in deploying and managing software within organizations, big or small.
While the operational benefits of Docker have been touted by many, the usage of containers as part of the daily development workflow seems neglected. The struggles that Docker resolves for Ops are similarly felt by Devs:
– What tools do I need to install on my system in order to build, run, and test a given project?
– How do I manage different versions of these tools?
– Am I unable to contribute because I'm using macOS/Windows?
– How do I share IDE configuration with my team?
Many of us have spent hours downloading, installing, tweaking, and configuring our system in order to get work done. We're left in a state where having to “reformat and reinstall” would be a dreaded process.
Contributing to a project should require little more than a git clone, and Docker gives us the power to make that happen. Let's start to treat our dev environments as cattle, not pets!
